Mine is that I'm not a big fan of short stories. However, while all of these stories are amazing and inspiring, they pale in comparison to the greatest story ever told. Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson: Connected short stories about an unnamed heroin addict named “fuckhead” who drifts around the country, getting in and out of trouble. The final story is the beautiful redemption of the heartbreak of the Garden and of Israel. In contrast to so many of the healing stories, the person in need of healing never asks for Jesus' help. Particularly Elijah and Elisha, both of whom raised the dead. Jesus sees her accompanying the funeral procession and is so moved by the sight that he brings her son back to life. In today's story, indeed, Elijah restores the hope a widow by raising her son from death. Denis Johnson changed my mind with this, now one of my all-time favorite books, and showed how to braid narrative and use the lyric register (poetic language). Luke reminds us that Jesus is like the prophets of Israel. Such a proof is however far from being in their hands, for none but Jesus (as)son of Mary, was ever called the Shahzada-Nabi or prince prophet. It is the gospel story, where Jesus, God's Son, proves faithful when humanity could not. It is also a story that continues the journey of Jesus whose purpose is to minister to the poor, the outcast and the “sinners”. The story of how God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins!
